Case in Point: Between Practices

29.04.2014

Case in Point: Between Practices
Tuesday, April 29, 7:00pm
Admission: 10 NIS. Free for Friends of the CCA

The panel will be held in English.

Artis and the Center for Contemporary Art are pleased to co-present an evening exploring experimental curatorial projects that push art outside itself and into other fields of practice. Three distinguished curators, Naomi Beckwith, Prem Krishnamurthy and Lucia Sanroman, will share their strategies for overlapping art with graphic design, community outreach, urban design, and public legislature. Their presentations will be followed by a discussion and Q&A moderated by CCA Curator Chen Tamir.

Naomi Beckwith will discuss her role as a trustee of the Laundromat Project, a community-based art project seeking to create art installations in the public spaces of underserved areas in NY. Her talk will examine parallels and divergences between the Laundromat Project and prominent social practice projects to examine recent shifts in art seeking to make critical interventions into communities and public life.

Lucia Sanroman will speak about Citizen Culture: Art and Architecture Shape Policy, and exhibition she curated that is currently on view at the Santa Monica Museum of Art. This exhibition features the work of nine international artists and architects who have demonstrated a sustained commitment to reshape public policy through aesthetics. Citizen Culture highlights projects in six cities—Oakland, Los Angeles, Chicago, Medellín, Bogotá, and Rio de la Plata—that use the power of art and architecture to raise social consciousness and transform the laws by which cities and citizens are governed. Artists include Suzanne Lacy, Tania Bruguera, Antanas Mockus, Ala Plástica (Silvina Babich and Alejandro Meitin), Laurie Jo Reynolds, Alejandro Echeverri and Teddy Cruz, and Michael Maltzan

Prem Krishnamurthy will discuss his programming at P!, a multidisciplinary exhibition space in New York City’s Chinatown that straddles the overlapping worlds of curating and design. For his talk, Krishnamurthy will focus on one exhibition, “The Ceiling Should Be Green” (2013): curated together with artist Kit Yi (Ali) Wong, this group show employed systems of chance and belief as both method and content. Wong and Krishnamurthy worked with a Feng Shui master to select the featured artists based on their birthdays and associated Chinese astrological traits, as well as to organize the artworks in harmony with each other and their environment.
